Turkey is currently a trading partner in the Customs Union of the EU, however is a "Transition Nation" planning to move to full EU Membership by 2014. Many global firms are establishing their headquarters in Turkey as a secure location for managing operations & trade with Eastern Europe, Middle East, Russian CIS & North Africa. Furthermore, Turkey is a major manufacturer, supplier and exporter of products to the EU such as agricultural & processed foods, automotive products, white goods & home electrical appliances, and textiles.

Trade between the UK and Turkey trade is estimated at around £6 billion GBP per annum, and the UK aims to increase trade to around £12 billion GBP by 2015. The UK is the second largest investor in Turkey. To achieve this volume of trade by 2015 and for Turkey to establish full EU Membership by 2014, Turkey will have to meet all EU requirements to gain full membership as well as comply with a number of EU directives. One of the fundamental requirements for Turkey gain full EU membership status is environmental compliance and to achieve this, the Republic of Turkey is in the process of advancing its environmental regulation to comply with EU levels, which is estimated at €100bn EUROS or around £83 billion GBP, of which it is estimated one third must be paid by private sector.
